We recently had the opportunity to complete a project for a local high school in Hoschton, Georgia. Todd Drake, the assistant principal at Mill Creek High School contacted us on our website back at the end of May. He requested new magnet boards/score boards for a new, fresh game deemed “The Hawk Games” he was planning on introducing to the student body.
These competition scoreboards are replacing the hand-painted murals on the walls of the cafeteria, which has caused somewhat of a controversy with both the alumni and the current students. For the past eight years, an art student has been selected to create a mural that represents the important events of the school year. Many of the students believe that the murals embodied Mill Creek’s school spirit and unique traditions. These people feel that all the memories, hard work, and talent have been replaced by this new system.
According to the Mill Creek Chronicle, “The Hawk Games” serves as a competition between the different lunches and grades (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior). Each score board includes both academic success and school pride with the categories being “Straight A’s”, “Pass Rate”, “Attendance”, “Tardies”, “Service”, etc.
The goal is to obtain the most points for your lunch period for a chance to win a prize such as a t-shirt or a catered lunch. Staff members are hoping that by receiving awards for good behavior and passing grades, it will motivate the students to do better and create a healthy competitive atmosphere.
Todd had previously worked with another company on the same project, but was not able to get the same quality of service from the large vendor. Stephen collaborated with Todd and went back and forth with design to ensure that everything was done properly and to his satisfaction.
The final product turned out to be massive cardinal, navy and gold 4’ x 16’ magnet boards made of .040 steel sheets. We used the school’s lift to put the boards up since they were to be placed so high up and used screws to hold them in place. They were installed the last week of July and the customer could not have been happier to have them up just in time for the new upcoming school year.
