Choosing the Right Sign Materials for the Job

So you are looking for a sign. There are several questions that you need to answer before a sign professional can help you with the design and cost.

  • How big is the sign?
  • Is it for indoor or outdoor use?
  • Is it permanent or more temporary?
  • How will you mount it?

Common Types Sign Materials

Temporary Sign MaterialsCommon Types Sign Materials

In the sign world there are many different materials from which to choose. Are you looking for a temporary sign that is relatively small and goes in a yard? Then, your most cost effective method would be to use corrugated plastic, or as we call it in the industry, “coroplast“. This is the material most election yard signs are made from. Being corrugated , as you can see in the picture insert, it easily allows for a wire stake to be inserted in the sign and the ground, making installation very easy.

However, the drawback to coroplast is that due to it being corrugated, the ridges can be seen through your graphic. So, if you are looking for a sign with a smoother appearance, this would not be a good option. If you want a temporary indoor sign, we recommend using foamboard, also called “Foam-core”, which has a flatter surface that keeps your graphic smooth and is also economical.

For More Permanent Signs, You Might Consider…

But, if you are looking for a more permanent sign, then you need to consider mounting your sign on a more durable product. Two materials that we use on a regular basis are “polymetal”, sometimes called Di-bond, which is aluminum with a plastic core or PVC. Both of these materials are long lasting and can hold up to weather fairly well.

Confused? Just call your local sign professional and they can help you determine the best material to suit the need of your sign.
